Marching into Spring... Journals, Jewels and Pretty Things!

So, I know it's not exactly spring yet, but for some reason, anytime the month of February ends, it feels like it's officially spring time... It's a bit gloomy here in NYC, but that's alright with me. I love a lil' rain while I work or organize my daily journaling. This month is filled with lots of projects, especially one in particular that 'm sponsoring called 30 Days of Lists!

Celebrating 38 Years of Grenada Independence

Today is Grenada's 38th Independence Anniversary and I wish I was home for the celebrations. Right about now I could do with a lovely day on the beach with family, a nice BIG POT of OIL DOWN and the wonderful smell of spices and island love!
In honor of my island, I created this painting quoted by Maurice Bishop "Forward Ever Backward Never"... Somehow I added the extra "S" to backwards while painting this!

Black History Month Love: Celebrating Bob Marley

It's nearly three decades after the passing of Bob Marley, and his voice seems to be stronger than ever. My parents actually had us listening to music from Soca, Jazz, even Rock! However, one of my father's favorite genre's reggae just resonated in the house. I grew up listening to the likes of Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Steel Pulse to name a few. However, there was a strong connection to the music of Bob Marley. I remember my sister and I dancing n' singing the lyrics of Bob Marley & the Wailers verbatim, pretending to be the I-Threes with mi mum right next to us! After my sister passed away, the music of Bob Marley seemed to soothe my heart n' soul with memories and I purchased every single CD, Poster, book, even went into my father's vault of records and took them with me! In the Caribbean, when we're close to an elder, we tend to give them the uncle or aunty title, so with that said, after listening to you since I was a baby, I'm sending you lots of LOVE & VIBRATIONS on your Earth Day Uncle Bob!

Black History Month Love: Esperanza Spalding "Black Gold"

For some reason, February 1st opened like a Lion! It's Black History Month and also early yesterday we learned of the passing of Soul Train's conductor, Don Cornelius"He was a Cultural Game Changer on a Global Level" - Al Sharpton R.I.P. Don Cornelius.

Also, one of my favorite artist, Esperanza Spalding debuted her new video "Black Gold"

If you remember the talented afro'-rockin'-sista who received a Grammy for I believe, Best New Artist (literally had Beiber fans in an uproar, please tell dem sit down lol)! This video was a refreshing vibe of jazz, soul and just Brown Sugar vybes. The video featured a touching connection of a father teaching his sons BlackHistory in a book entitled "Black Gold". It brought tears to my eyes because it reminded me of my childhood with my parents and them teaching me not only Black History but CULTURAL HISTORY... THANK YOU ESPERANZA for blessing us with such a beautiful video!

D.I.Y. Fabric Lined Calendar

It's the 1st of the month and my mum and I have a tradition where we say "Rabbit+Rabbit+Rabbit" (you can check out this post on my old blog about the meaning). I wrote out my list out for the month and realized there's so many things going on, so I wanted to create an easy calendar for the kitchen where hubby and I can check and know what's going on for the month as well as making it available to be interchangeable and custom designed. This is an easy tutorial for a fabric lined Kitchen Calendar!

Supplies:
* Sheet Protector
*Adhesive (glue or double sided tape)
*Magnets (adhesive backed)
*Scissors
*Fabric (I opted for a natural looking fabric to look like the old sugar bags from Home)
*Print out of Calendar

Gather your supplies! You can cut a piece of fabric that lines that top or side binding which measured about 4" x 11". You fold the fabric and adhere to the back with double sided tape or glue and adhere to the front as well.

I then placed two (self adhesive) magnets on either side of the calendar and SWEET, you have your calendar holder. Then place your calendar in the protective sheet!

Friday Faves: Soca+Jewelry+Carnival

Today is Friday (Thank you God) and that means the weekend is basically here!!! I know a few of ya'll are preparing to pack for Trinidad Carnival and some of ya'll are just enjoying the vibes vicariously through someone else! So, while yuh organizing, here are a few of my favorite Friday things:

Soca: My 2 favorite chunes of the week: Fay Ann's Miss Behave!! I can't explain the royal madness I feel when I hear this chune! I literally almost dance up on the bus traveling to the hair dresser this week to this chune! LOVE the VIBES, the RIDDIM and her harmonizing is beautiful!

And Iwer's "No Pain"... Of course, if you've known me for some time, I'm a Grenadian to de BONE... and if it's one thing most of us love, is good Jab-Jab chune. The beat is all I need with this chune and if it's something like Lavaman and Talpree's chune from Grenada carnival this past summer, the performance is going to be AMAZING! Can't wait!!!

Jewelry: My favorite earrings this week is Love & Soca designs and hearts! Thanks to the lovely Petra from http://gyenyamejapan.blogspot.com, I sent a few of these Ear Candies to Tokyo for a fete!

Also, my birthday was this past week, so I'm full of love and had to wear the Red Leather Hearts for the day!! Check me enjoying the roses from hubby. Thank you honey.

Carnival Brag Book "Must Save" List!

Snow Day: Juicin' & Valentine's Day Pop-Up Shop

It SNOWED today!!! Well not blizzard like but definitely a pretty snow fall that needed shoveling and cleaning up. I met with a client today to drop off a jewelry order and do some healthy food shopping after that!

I went to a quaint shop up the block and low and behold they had a juice out of this world called "True Blood" (Yeah I know my True Blood HBO fans are smiling right now!)

Filled with Beets, Blueberry, Banana, & Pomegranate!

Speaking of Juicing, please check out Juice Hugger in Brooklyn (85 Rogers Avenue between St. Marks & Prospect Pl. in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.) . I am lover of their Cashew Milk, don't knock it till you try it! They're putting together a Pop Up Shop Valentine's Day Store on February 11th with some fabulous creative entrepreneurs including myself and my girl from A Life Balanced! So come on by because I'll have the latest designs from Love & Soca inspired jewelry! Including the green leather hearts I'm wearing below. Oh and while you're there try their yummy juices and bring home some of the cashew milk!

Trinidad Carnival Inspired Jewels: Yuma "Call of Duty"

So, usually around this time I'm posting all the Carnival designs I've created for my clients. However, this year I'm waiting for after Carnival to put together some photos of everyone in full mas regalia. I was given permission by one of my clients to go ahead and post their Carnival Monday earrings or I should a design close to it. Let's just say I added a lil this and that to the earring to give it a carnival vibe! She's playing in Yuma's "Call of Duty" which is a HOT design for the militant lovin' chica! Also, look out tomorrow for some "Love" inspired designs... Valentine's Day is right around the corner!

POP of COLOR in WINTER

Yes, I watch it's a "Brad, Brad World" on Bravo and I love when he mentions "POP of Color" because I'm a believer of adding color to everything, to my food, my journals and of course my jewelry. Now that it's winter, especially here on the east coast, it's all about chunky scarves, gloves and hats. Everything is over sized and the weather can be gloomy, so for days like this, I love to accessorize with pieces that just POP.
Here are some South African traditional beaded bracelets I wore yesterday to liven up my look! The first bracelet is actually my sister's from The Brooklyn African Street Festival circa 1990. There's that little piece of string I refuse to fix, embracing all the imperfections and wearn'tear that she once wore!So, while we wait for spring and summer days to come, accentuate your daily style with some color and culture! Choose any color off the rainbow, combine, mix, match... it's your life, treat it like a music video you would like to watch everyday!

New Look, New Designs, Carnival 2012 & More

Happy New Years everyone! I know, it's like 17 days into the New Year and I now reach and how many days till Carnival hmmmm!? lol But it was all in the name of work and organizing! Thanks to the lovely hands of Hope from Paper Relics (btw, you must check out her blog for her amazing journals and classes because it's very inspiring), she helped create this beautiful new look for my blog. I wanted something clean and simple so I can showcase more photos and designs on the page. I've also combined Mango+Paper+Scissors blog with Aye' Shanti to keep everything in one place. So, look out for some arts&crafts on here including some of the latest Stationary in the shop!

I'm very excited for the New Year, especially after finishing up the 12 Days of Reflection last month. So many people joined in on the journey and I received some great feedback. I just hope everyone is working on making those reflections manifest into 2012!

As for Carnival 2012, most of my clients received their jewelry and I can't wait to see the designs on the road! I actually woke up to a twitter message from @GyeNyameJapan that she received her order and it just made me smile! And as you can see, Petra is rockin' one of the latest Ankara Necklaces that match the fabric button earrings I've been creating for my shop: Mango+Paper+Scissors and she looks lovely!

Talking about Carnival, as you can see in the last photo, I created a feather creation for her costume in the Ronnie & Caro band... with Trinidad Carnival 2k12 well on its way, I've been adding finishing touches to jewelry and accessories and they're all soooo lovely! I've also added some Carnival Journals to some special orders. Let's just say a Carnival Journal Challenge is coming very soon! Look out for it!

So forgive my slackness on Day 7... I was at the ophthalmologist for the past couple of days organizing my eyes, so thank goodness I was able to get things in order!

So, just in case you're not following me on Facebook or Twitter here are Day 7 and Day 8:

"Was there a quote or saying that inspired you this past year?" Did you find yourself writing down or referring back to a line that got you through something or perhaps even made you laugh?
This prompt was inspired by @paperrelics Paper Relics

Day 8: #reflect11 "If you can say thank you to someone or to a # of people, who would they would be?"

So we did a thankful list but how about a "thank you" list. If we can put together a list of people who have been there for us in the past year, perhaps a bus driver who waited for you at the stop several mornings, or a neighbor, a teacher, your family members or friends. A simple "thank you" could bring a special holiday joy into their lives. Perhaps you will consider sending them a "thank you" note, text or phone call to them after this.

12 Days of Reflection 2011 Challenge - Day 2

Good Morning and welcome to Day 2 of "12 Days of Reflection Challenge!" Today’s question/prompt is “What were some thankful moments of 2011?”

This was inspired by a beautiful group of sistas I’m apart of called Thanksgiving Tuesday, where we use our Tuesdays to reflect on what we’re thankful for! I decided to paint my page gold in reference to Jill Scott’s song “Golden” and use bits and pieces of paper I cut out!

Here it goes:

-Afternoon tea with my mum

-For the experiences good and bad. They made me stronger

-Text messages from my besties

-For meeting so many inspiring people

-Creative days and nights

-Dates with my honey!

-Hugs from my father!

-Visits with my 2^nd family!

I love reading so many different responses and I’m so thankful for everyone sharing them. I decided to use some magazine clippings in my first entry!

I found this image in Urban Outfitters catalog and loved how serene this sista looked petting the horse... Oh and I love her denim outfit with scarf... and her hair! (hint hint 2012)

Here's my #reflect11

So if I had to name 2011, I would call it, SURVIVAL... I feel so blessed with all that's in my life from my home, my honeybun, my family, framilies lol, and just awesome people in my life, despite the ups and downs with getting a business together, learning to listen to my inner self more and as Tim Gunns would say "Making it Work"... I have nothing to complain but just SURVIVE... it has literally been the building block and foundation for my 2012. I claim 2012 to have a first and last name: BOLD & BRILLIANT. I see fabulousness, fun times, more creativity and just a colorful experience. I am so excited that even though it's for 2012, I'm already starting and letting the names reflect my life!! *EXHALE*

12 Days of Reflections Challenge!

12 Days of Reflection 2011 Challenge

Every year around the holidays, I’ve always dedicated a journal or notebook to questions and lists about the past year and my hopes for the New Year. However, this year, I was inspired by a group of women who created an online challenge of sorts called #reverb11, #relish11, or # resound11 (check those hashtags on Twitter). They gave out daily prompts or questions throughout the month of December that allowed you to think about the past year and to also prepare for the coming year through reflective writing, journaling or drawing.

I must say that this year was filled with passion, excitement and lots of challenges (all part of my experience) and I definitely want to document about 2011 but also to share the experience with others.

I’ve decided to create a smaller version of this event called 12 Days of Reflection (#reflect11) from December 12^th – 23^rd filled with topics on the past year and preparing for 2012. You can follow my prompts or create your own. You don’t need a fancy book at all. You can use an old journal, notebook, gather 12 pages, even use your online pages just to make it easy for yourself if you’re new to this. However, if you’re like me, I get excited about these types of challenges and I love to create a beautiful journal I can look back at!

If you have a blog add it to your blog for others to check out.

If you miss a day, that’s okay, you can skip it or work on it when you’re ready. And if you’re not big on writing, express yourself through quotes, a picture, drawing, or song lyrics.

Tis' the Season in Style!

Good morning lovely people,
So now that Thanksgiving is over, I'm sure everyone is organizing their lists for gifts or greeting cards for the special people in their lives. For some time, I've been creating greeting cards for clients and finally for the holidays I've prepared a line to be sold in my Etsy Shop!

Here's the first batch of goodies which are an eclectic mix of fashion, vintage, culture and flirty for the holidays. Not to mention my favorites "Clutch Your Pearls" and "Cultural Hand Bags".

These cards were created to not only be placed on the mantel but a lovely addition to your desk, to be framed, or even displayed all year round, especially for the materials used to create this lovely effect where the design comes off the page.

Holiday Electric Blue Inspired!

Sooo, this year my honey and I are planning to attend a holiday event and I'm looking for the absolute holiday party dress. As I was skimming through Lucky magazine Nov 2011 issue, the "Lucky Girl" of the month is Solange Knowles. She's rocking these Janet Jackson circa "Poetic Justice" braids and this awesome electric blue sequins dress! I was SOLD...

I'm definitely going to look for this dress or something similar with the high slit on the side. I may pass on my usual rhinestone drop earrings for some studs and rock one of my large flower creations so it's very reminiscent of Billie Holiday with a touch of the Caribbean.

Now, how am I going to get him to match me! Lol

21 days of cleanse & Africa "Pink" Earrings!!

Sooo, I've been kind of quiet for about 21 days because I was on a cleanse with my girl, Alana from "A Life Balanced"... and today is finally here! This was the juicing part of the journey and it was tough but definitely worth it!! I can't wait to bite into a lentil pattie or drink a lovely peanut punch this weekend with my new favorite drink thanks to her: Cashew Milk from Juice Hugger, right here in Brooklyn!

I documented my journey in this lovely hand-made journal and can't wait to sure some great things that I've learned along the way!

She even juiced a great kale/banana concoction that I had to keep my eye out for a ninja blender to start making my own juices!

Also, after a lovely meeting with Alana, she shared some lovely goodies with me from her beautiful whipped body butters, black soap, that I now use not only after a warm shower but also as a preparation before I sit in my studio to work! Please check her link out when you get a chance for all the healthy loveliness she has to share!

Oh, being that this is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I've
created a Africa "Pink" Earring design for a few ladies doing the walks, events, and look out for some giveaways!!

Carnival Inspired Jewelry (Miami): Fatal Angels "Venus"

So, Happy Friday everyone... The days are counting down till allyuh reach in Miami and even though I will not be there *I'monaTnTCarnivalbudget* lol , I know it's going to be a blast, especially the ladies n' gents rockin' my pieces in the fetes and on the road!!

So my Carnival Inspiration for today comes from the lovely ladies of Fatal Angels with the section called "Venus" for Natural Freaks... So, I know it's another one side earring but it really works for some costumes, especially this hot number with a hood... A hood?! Really!? This is my costume dream because I love hoodies, very urban and cute!

So, looking at this model, she's rocking the one side earring with a chain on the other! Like I mentioned yesterday, "It allows you to be more than one look from various angles..."

So, I created another version of this design, but this time with these beautiful gold rhinestone nuggets, very similar to yesterday's design for Chimaera- Carnival Nationz. Knowing Miami, when the sun hits these earrings, it's pure shine and glitz, and that's the ultimate photo op while on the road!

Carnival Inspired Jewelry (Miami): Carnival Nationz (Chimaera)

Hey everyone, welcome back for more designs inspired by my favorite costumes!

I had the opportunity to check out a few costumes from Miami and thanks to a lovely carnival dahlin, Clivia, I was able to view some beautiful costumes from the band, Carnival Nationz (Miami). Their theme for the road this year is a mysterious story entitled "Mythical Tales"... After viewing the costumes, I was in love with tale of CHIMAERA and just the color scheme and jewels. Check out the story line below (so detailed and true to the costume)

The Chimaera is a BLAST of BLAZING FIRE…

A multi-creature creature… a monstrous fire-breathing female creature composed of parts from other animals. A body of a Lioness… a tail that ends with a Snake head… the head of a Goat from the centre of her spine… all compiled to create a beast of monumental proportions. The offspring of two Greek demons… the Chimaera is swift-footed, brutally strong, and never backs down from a fight. Face the Chimaera and you not only battle one beast but several creatures wrapped up in one… a blast of blazing fire!!!

I decided to create a piece that not only had the colors of the costume but also had the similar bits of jewels cascading down the feathers.

I did a one side earring, because something about the story line speaks of a multi-creature and what I love about one side designs, is that it allows you to be more than one look from various angles, so you can either wear a stud or chain on the other side.

(However this can be created as a pair) It's very light weight, glitzy and can be worn even after carnival!! So, I hope you enjoyed today's inspiration and also check out their site, I still see a few costumes available!

Carnival Inspired Jewelry (Miami): Orion's Belt

So at the Caribbean Fashion Show a couple weeks here in Brooklyn, we were blessed with the presence of a lovely costume presentation from Orion's Belt with Natural Freaks for Miami Carnival. I automatically knew that I wanted to create an earring design for this costume.

I added sparkling gem at the top for a celestial effect and a mix of turquoise blue feathers to give a pop of color to the ears.

Like many mas players like myself, I always try to make a piece that still sings "Carnival" even when the head piece is off or you have a major back pack.

So, after some hard work for a couple of weeks, the fashion show was worth it. Made connections with lots of great Caribbean designers and some lovely clients. Now that I'm playing catch up, I'm organizing some jewelry inspiration ideas for Miami and Trinidad Carnival, some custom designs for OLD/NEW clients, and preparing to work on holiday orders! I'm so excited and thankfully took a week to get my energy back to normal!

Labor Day Weekend: Fashion Show Sneak Peek!!

I've been working so hard in adding the finishing touches to these incredible designs for the Caribbean Fashion Show Extravaganza that's happening in Brooklyn, NY this Saturday! The theme of my segment is all about the beach, the lime, the experience of the Caribbean. Lots of incredible colors, NEW designs, and just awesomeness!! I also, stopped by some mas camps and I'm so impressed with what I'm seeing, especially out the Fatal Angels Camp (I must say Sinfully Sweet is looking GREAT!!)

Feather SALE & Caribbean Fashion Show!

If you don't know, yesterday was the start of the FEATHER earrings SALE on Mango+Paper+Scissors shoppe! I'm selling some great pieces running from $5-$8 full of colors, styles, and designs... There very light and definitely earrings for my clients who love feather earrings but not the typical dramatic, long, and flowing pieces I usually create.

Crop Over Send Off Aye' Shanti Style...

So, since Wednesday I've been looking for last minute tickets to Barbados for Crop Over, just in time to come in for the Bathsheba All Inclusive fete... (which I doubt is happening, but a sista could dream nuh!)

So, as I prepare for a fun-filled weekend hanging with my bestie, I will be in Barbados in spirit wukkinup, playing mas, laying on the beach, and having a sip of some Mount Gay Rum!!

I was also inspired to create this Bajan Ear Candy! I added the broken trident from the center of the flag which represents the break from its colonial past... So when you wear these earrings and someone questions you about them, you can school them with some Caribbean history! Look out for some more designs with a story to tell!

I had the pleasure of working on a custom design from the "Banana Leaf" collection for some clients and I must say, orange is a lovely color to combine with yellows, greens, and even pink! And not just pink but Hot Pink!

I love that these custom orders are full of colors. Added with a lil' soca... my nights in the studio is jewelry paradise!

Introducing the Island Hoppin’ Collection: representing the islands of Grenada, Barbados, and Trinidad to name a few (but not limited to these islands). This was inspired by the traditional jewelry of our parents who worn the maps in various metals with a sense of pride. Here’s a spin on those designs filled with an urban, funky twist! These are not your typical map jewelry created in metal but a design that’s hand crafted, cut, and painted. Also, to make it even more personal, I’ve added swarvoski crystals to a particular parish(es) you or your family is from.
I love the idea of also customizing a piece in different colors or styles, so I welcome a conversation on how to make this unique for you.

Carnival Inspired Jewelry: Carnival Divaz' "Bacchanalia"

For Day 3 of Carnival Inspired Jewelry, I have the pleasure of creating a piece inspired by the fabulous designs of Carnival Divaz Promotions, section "Bacchanalia" with Sesame Flyers for Labor Day in Brooklyn. It is full of feathers, jewels, and lots of colors...

I wanted to work with a design like this because of it's large head piece. I've always created long feathery, leather, or crochet w/ crystals earrings and wanted to try something a little different. Recently I've been working with carnival lovers who must play front-line, and with a head piece that is large, in my opinion a smaller design close to the ear like a button earring can be the perfect balance for accessorizing your costume.

So taking some of the colors from "Bacchanalia", I created a jeweled button earring that is the size of a half dollar which allows for crystals to glisten in the sun, yet it doesn't over power the face. Again, I love when you can take off your head piece and if it's the face jewels or accessories, you still portray the mas!

I also have another design that's currently in my shoppe Mango+Paper+Scissors called "Rainbow after the Storm" that also mimics the colors and of this costume!

Carnival Inspired Jewelry: Carnival Hunters "Parrot"

So, I’m working on orders and designs for Carnivals throughout the Caribbean to Toronto, NY, and London this summer, I'm having a great time putting together pieces inspired by costumes. I had the pleasure of going to Carnival Hunters Band Launch this past Saturday, which was my first fete in a loooooonnnnnnnggg time lol and it was a nice come back. Held on the roof of the Brooklyn Children's Museum, as soon as you entered the doors of the event, you were instantaneously brought to a Caribbean vibes filled with colors, music, and of course my favorite IRON! lol

But, back to CARNIVAL! I've been eyein' this costume on Facebook for Kadooment (Barbados) called "Parrot" with the band Fantasy Barbados. For some reason, I have a thing for Mohawk head pieces and just loved the look, so I created a feather/chain design. One thing I notice about jumping up, is that I start off with my head piece on, then in the middle of the jump up, you'll find it either on the truck or in hand, and when it's time to CROSS, I have it back on like the Carnival Queen I was meant to be. So, I created an earring with that in mind.

First, I wanted to play with a piece that's light weight, and embraced the colors. I love the idea of wearing an earring that allows you to take off your head piece and still look like mas. (Btw, forgive me, this was an early morning shoot and I was trying to play around with the lighting on my iPhone, but trust the feathers has more of the turquoise color that matches the costume.)

I loved the chain work on the belt, so you'll find a combination of feathers and chains. When it comes to this, I also realize, this would be a great one side earring where you have an intense one side with the feather design and the other side just gold chains... Designed to wear on and off the road!

So, if you're in Barbados for Crop Over I would definitely rock this costume (with these earrings of course) down the road! So don't hesitate, if you're heading down or want to head down last minute, hit them up!

Carnival Inspired Jewelry: Fatal Angels "Sinfully Sweet"

When it comes to carnival, I'm always looking at the cut, design, and shape of a costume before creating an earring or accessories for a client. When I stumbled across Fatal Angel's "Sinfully Sweet" section with Ramajay Mas, I was automatically in love with the color and the various options.

They have a number of designs for you to choose from, and I decided to create a piece for the Backline w/Feather Headpiece in mind.

I love the curve of the head piece, so I put together some various shades of pink feathers, making sure to choose the ones with a slight bend to match the shape of the head piece.

I then added some jewels in a curve for some uniformity. I'm a lover of one side earrings, and with a head piece of this nature, a one side feather would work perfectly. Either a chain earring on the other side or a crystal stud can be paired with it. This is a light weight earring which is great for jumpin' up and forgetting that you have an accessory on.

Island Hopping Inspired Jewelry: SNEAK PEEK!!

So, I've been holding on to these pieces for a minute in preparation for them to be worn by a few of my clients heading down to the Carnivals/Festivals, so I'm SOOOOO excited. I actually had the pleasure of wearing them at the "Grenada Day" event in Brooklyn yesterday, and such a wonderful response! This is why I love a New Year… it’s a way to start New and Fresh with everything. As I prepare to showcase the new pieces, I will be organizing this blog and the website, so please be patient with me. Inspired by my new place, my journey, the internship at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, music, the FELAAAAAA performance, fabulous rockin’ friends and customers, from a carnival diva designer, a talented dj with angel wings and headphones for a halo lol, a socarobics instructor with moves to whip your waist into shape, my razor sharp hairdresser, my besties (REAL, SWEET, and SPIRITUAL you know who you are ladies), my mate and musical genius, and biggest fan and friend, mum… you’ve all inspired this creation that’s about to BLOOM!

Hellllo Family!!

Soooo, I know it's been a minute, okay more like months that I've linked up with you all on here. However, some of you have been keeping up with me and still ordering, thank you for the support! I've been so busy with classes, working on orders, especially weddings!!! Now that I have some down time, I'm such a busy bee, and can't wait to show you the NEW creations this week!! I will be organizing a gathering with clients to check it out... Let me give you a hint: VINTAGE with a TWIST!
Anyway, in the mean time, I know most of you are either boiling sorrel, baking bread, putting up new curtains, still soaking your fruits for black cake, or even preparing the last set of barrels for back home, and for those who are still putting up their tree, let me share with you an inexpensive decorating treat!! Oh and it doesn't hurt to play a chune with it for inspiration:

My theme for our Christmas tree was a mix of not only some of my paper flower designs, with a (red,gold, green palette), but also a musical vibe! I used some of my dahlin's old cd's and dazzled them up with some glitter and tagged them with some of my favorite Christmas Soca chunes. Check it out!

“Aye’ Shanti Earrings featured in Krosfyah’s “Chrissening” music video!!”

So, last night, I’m working on some jewelry orders for Miami Carnival, and someone sends me a YouTube link of Krosfyah’s latest music video “Chrissening”. To my lovely surprise, I see my green feather earrings on a Jamaican beauty, Ms. Tanisha (1:58 to be exact into the video and right through). I’ve seen my pieces in photos and videos but in a KROSFYAH music video, now that’s a first…. I can’t explain how ecstatic and blessed I am feeling. So, now that Labor Day is over...

I have to say this was one Labor Day weekend I will never forget! I had a wonderful time at the Fashion show with Ethel Designs by Donna Weekes and the other fabulous designers. To see my pieces go down the runway was just amazing and reminded me why working till 3am some mornings was worth it! And, my sidekick for the evening and a muse to my work, Simone, you brought a balance to the space and everything ran so smoothly! Thank you...

I also have to thank some of my friends and clients I saw in the audience, as I walked down for the finale, the roaring screams made me more comfortable and I think I even shed a tear or two!

Hopefully, I'll get some pics from the show this week for everyone to enjoy! There was some new jewelry created for the show that will be on sale soon, from the oversized Bamboo earrings, oversized crochet earrings, metallic flower earrings, and the infamous fringe flowing earrings (that everyone gravitated too)!!

Ohhh and thank you for the great sales and feedback with the website this weekend. I'm already working on Miami Carnival jewelry and in discussion for Trinidad Carnival!!

I feel so blessed and thankful for all the support from my family, friends, and my dahlin! There's so much to come with ideas and designs, so please be on the look out!

Some say Last Lap, Some say it's just the beginning!!

So, as we near Labor Day on the Parkway, there's so much I'm preparing for... Finishing up earrings and custom order pieces for Carnival costumes (Oh, I wish I was playing!!!) and also preparing for one of the most fabulous Caribbean fashion shows this Carnival Saturday at the Aviator Ballroom in Brooklyn!! SO, please come and check us out before Panorama, or that all inclusive fete... it starts at 6pm SHARP, and besides checking out the hottest Caribbean designers in town, you're also going to check out some new pieces from the Aye' Shanti collection! Very DRAMATIC, VERY COLORFUL, and VERY UNIQUE!!
Some other great news, the website, the website, the website... There will be a launch this week, and I'm excited with the great help of the web designer (Nooner) for getting things on the ball... I can't wait!

Yes, yes, yes... I know, where have I been? lol No, not under a rock... but perhaps in my garden near a rock, but nevertheless, still here! I ketch' a musical creative vybe early this morning after listening to a few carnival chunes for the season, creating lots of pieces and getting ready for the various festivals this summer!! From Vincy, Lucian, CropOver, Toronto, Spice Mas,and of course Brooklyn! I couldn't help but find a vintage chune from my music archives for further inspiration, Kevin Lyttle's "Home for Carnival"...

So in between beating iron with my paint brushes, burning the midnight oil, and creating some fabulous carnival jewelry... Aye' Shanti is excited and ready to see her clients on the road!!

I have a new line of feather creationz, creative crochet earrings, various hoops in sterling silver, copper, and brass! Not to mention a line of flower creations called "Urban Graffiti Garden!"... Inspired by the community and neighborhood garden designs in Brooklyn, growing in the midst of urban settings, filled with speckled graffiti walls, different cultures, and sounds... Trinidad Carnival is Over and I'm Fine!! lol

This road mix by Machel, "Thiefin" just puts me in a jouvert vibe and if any of y'all who know me, I LOVE A JOUVERT... Ketch I playing a WICKED JAB a Jouvert NEAR YOU!!!

Sooo, I'm so happy to say that my carnival pieces were a hit. It was great to catch Aye' Shanti in pics and videos from fetes, jouvert, Monday & Tuesday Mas... I didn't get to make it this year due to a photo shoot and a show and needed to be here to handle business, HOWEVER, my spirit was in TnT... I felt as my earrings were jumpin' and flying in the fetes, I felt the spirit of the madras piece on de road for jouvert ketchin' real' vibes that I literally was thinking around 4 am... Ms. BachannalDiva must be on de road ALLL now... Or that the feather pieces Isis from Fatal Angels were rocking was totally making a debut not only on Monday but Tuesday! Oh and my girls in Tribe, Stacy n' Joanne brought the flower adornment and crochet earrings alive! There are lots of more Aye' Shanti Carnival pieces that I haven't mentioned and waiting for pics, but sooo happy for the connections, especially to my beautiful clients!

Sooo... now it's all about Summer 2k10... Fabulous website coming along, a wedding photo shoot in the works for the Spring.. and of course being ahead of the game have the Fall 2k10 line ready for production!

I'm learning a lot about myself spiritually, mentally, and emotionally, and I'm so happy to pour all of that into my jewelry that I create! Stay true to self, continue loving and living life, and of course, STAY BEAUTIFUL! Oh and play some of your favorite music and enjoy the snow and pretend to play mas! Lol

One Year ago... My 1st Carnival Jewelry on the Road!! I am Thankful!!

As I go through my Carnival Tabanca, organizing orders, and living in love... I remember that exactly one year ago, I created a Carnival piece for my friend Samantha and I think to myself, look at where I'm at today! I'm so thankful to have customers who are wearing my piece in the land of Oil and Music!! I may not be there, but Aye' Shanti is truly dancing in a fete or on the road somewhere and that's good enough for me! I've learned that we don't know where our lives may take us, but we must trust that tide and flow with it. I am so excited and ready for carnivals to come, fashion shows, meeting new clients, and creating more! I have many new things in my life and I'm so thankful!! Soooo, for my family who's not in TnT, don't worry, we always have next year or we have CROPOVER/GREENZ... and other sweet fetes filled with riddim sections, great people, and music for days!!

FOR THREE DAYS STRAIGHT I'VE BEEN CREATING AND LITERALLY PUTTING MYSELF ON THE ROAD MENTALLY TO IMAGINE HOW THESE PIECES WOULD LOOK... BUT OF COURSE YOU NEED THE INSPIRATION, SO I TURN TO MY FIRST LOVE, SOCA! I'VE BEEN SO BLESSED WITH ORDERS, THAT WITH MORE REQUESTS, THE MORE I HAVE TO IMAGINE THE COSTUME, HOW WOULD THE PIECE FIT WITH THE PERSON, AND THE FABULOUSNESS OF IT ON THE ROAD!! I'M FINALLY FINISHED WITH THE FIRST HALF OF CARNIVAL PIECES, SO SOME OF YOU HAVE THEM OR WILL HAVE A GIFT IN YOUR EMAIL IN THE MORNING OF A QUICK GLIMPSE!

THE CHUNE IS VERY SIMPLE (ESPECIALLY THE CHORUS, BASICALLY "CARNIVAL, CARNIVAL, ITS CARNIVAL, CARNIVAL..." BUT SOMETHING ABOUT IT TAKES ME TO A PLACE... IT'S PROBABLY THE RIDDIM BUT IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, ADD A LIL MORE DRUMMING TO IT, OR CREATE A ROADMIX, TRUST ME... I CAN SEE PEOPLE CHIPPIN DOWN DE ROAD!

WHOIII GAL WHOOI: BUSY SIGNAL & MACHEL MONTANO- THIS CHUNE IS A MIX OF TRADITIONAL FOLK MUSIC, REGGAE AND CALYPSO RIDDIMS... I DON'T CARE WHAT PEOPLE TELL ME, I HEAR THE FOLK LOL... I ALMOST BUSSED INTO A BIG DRUM/BELLAIR DANCE ON THE TRAIN THE OTHER DAY!! LOL THIS CHUNE WOULD BE NICE IN A FETE!

So, as I'm working on these lovely pieces (Flower earrings, adornments, Monday & Tuesday accessories) for Trinidad Carnival, I listen to the Soca chunes for inspiration... I try to imagine the costume on, how would the earrings fall, how would head band go, bracelets would look (would it add a lil cling and clang perhaps)All I can do is shake my head! So, as most of you know, I'm a lover of DRUMS, IRON, and ANYTHING THAT WAKES UP THE CARNIVAL QUEEN IN ME! Thanks to a few friends who share the passion for Soca music, they hooked a sista up for her birthday, and well over 100 songs for TnT 2k10!
A few favorites:
Machel's "Not Going Home" Original and Drum Mix... Equally moves me. "Sunrise from the East and illuminates the land...It's like a Gospel choir take over my brain, I try to keep them out but the melodies *refrain* what a feeling, look to the heavens, give thanks to life, de rains fall like a blessings from the sky, AND I ... RAISE MY HANDS UP HIGH, WHILE WE MOVE AS 1, SO NOTHING CAN KEEP US APART, WE MOVE WITH 1 ♥ , WE KNOW WHERE WE CO...ME FROMJ UMP TO DE LEFT! HOLD A STRANGER TIGHT, WE CELEBRATE BROTHERLY LOVE.. in de land of our birth, WE NAH GOING HOME TONIGHT!" The Soca Baptist in me is really trying to tame herself! lol

3Suns & Benjai "Foreigner"- Lawd... as soon as mi boi sent me this chune, I was of course shaking from side to side! Very vintage, and I swear the riddim in the background is Machel's "Too Young To Soca"... with the drums and bass, it's a fete, even a jouvert favorite! Just call me a Foreigner! lol

Blaze & Jay W "Palance" I can see myself jumping up with no cares to this chune on the road! A definite going down de road, I can imagine the Roadmix.. Especially that part "1-2-3-4"!!

Fay-Ann "Ah Something"- Sooo, I'm Grenadian if you don't know and ummm, I LOVE any riddim with the right lyrics that's Jouvertish! "AH Thinking of something, yuh feeling ah crazy or wha!?" lol Gutter Riddim is SOLID!

Teri Lyons "Carnival Again"- *Smh*... you hear the Capoeira riddims of the instrument, Berimbau, really gives the song it's HEART... with the lyrics, I love it!
Funny every time she sings "MOVE"... I think she chose the perfect riddim, Capoeira is a dance of war! I think the Roadmix would make it even sweeter for the road!

Patrice "Road Show!!" I just adore this chune... Another perfect "COSTUME JUMP UP SONG"... You know what I mean, the chune where you can see yourself in your costume and lettin' go! Feathers, beads swaying... and you almost forget that you're either a backline or frontline costume and not a QUEEN or KING!

Machel's "Bumper to Fender"- oh gosh, this tugs at my heart! Lawd, the OFFICIAL ROADMIX, sell off! Please just pass me my Tribe, Spice, or Island People cup one time and fill it!!

Honorable Mentions:
Machel "Thiefin" D'Enforcas Mix with the whistle, the 80's soca riddim, something about it is very sweet!!

Maximus' "Fallin"- OMG.. I can see myself in that fete swaying and doing a lil' two step with that someone in a fete! Love it!

Devon Matthews "From Today" Roadmix.. Again, I'm a sucker for whistles n' irons! I see it on de road! "De Carnival start from TODAY" It's true!

Greetings Family,
So we're 28 days into the year and I'm so excited for things to come. I know it's been a minute since I've been on here, but I was in organizing mode. Website is coming along www.ayeshanti.com,(which should be ready in 2 weeks)for now we have a coming soon page for some buzz! The photo shoot is being prepared for next week (so check for some behind the scenes shots), and brand new designs for the Spring/Summer 2010 will be showcased!

I'm also coming out with a new line of exotic flowers for earrings, pins, and hair adornments. My handcrafted jewelry and accessories are prepared to tell you a story inspired by a written piece I did on the Caribbean Woman. This is the Art I know best and I'm prepared to make these wearable arts come alive! Thank you all for your support and chat with you soon!

I'm truly a Dawtah of the Sun!

Soooo, I'm back from Barbados, and I must say that it was an amazing, energizing, and inspirational trip. I have to thank my sista, Shakira from Ki-Leah Cosmetic Designs for her support and for making this happen!

The idea of moving back "home" which is Grenada excites me. To be awaken by a caressing breeze, or to be energized by the beautiful BOLD SUN, and to drink some of the most refreshing, cold, CLEAN water, Barbados made me realize, I'm so thankful to be a Caribbean Woman! This inspired me to break out my college thesis, and to work on a Collection based on the topic (to be revealed very soon with sketches). I met some fabulous people, Tammy from Party Central Lime Promotions and artist, Nakazzi, (please check her out on www.nakazzi.com), they don't even know how they inspired me! I was a bit under the weather when I returned, however thanks to my mum and her healing hands, teas from her garden, and a great soup, I'm healed and ready to work on Aye' Shanti further! So, with that said, after my finals this week, I will reveal some amazing pieces inspired by my trip, some research, and adornments from my recent collection. I'm currently working on building the website and hopefully to have some creations in stores here in NYC and in the Caribbean!

The morning after... Smh! Last night was a success. From the tabling, the music, the vibbbes, Party Central Lime for the Barbados Independence was sweeeeet! Between Ki-Leah Cosmetic Design and Aye' Shanti Pieces, we had a fabulous time promoting, networking, and just having plain ole' fun! I loved watching the customers take off their earrings they came with and placing my designs on the spot of purchase and as the girls were gettin glammed up from the amazing Ki-Leah artistry they were clearly as a Bajan would put it, wukkinup in their seats! I am definitely looking into doing this for Grenada's Independence and for the Caribbean in general. I love what I'm doing and doing what I love!

Day 3 in BIM

As I'm awaken by the sweet breeze which caresses my cheeks this morning, I realize it's filled with fresh green grass, sun, riddim, aromatic fruits and flowers of this beautiful island of Barbados. It makes me nostalgic for my Spice Isle and soo thankful to be from the Caribbean. Each night has been amazing parties, people asking about my earring designs, and just a sweeet sweeet vibes. It has literally remove the memories and drowned the once familiar sounds of Brooklyn, New York... Speaking of sounds, I've yet to hear a Tuk band play and hope that I get the chance to before we prepare for this event today "Party Central Lime" (please refer to the first entry on this blog or my Face book for information and flyer). Otherwise, Day 3 is starting off great and hope the Aye' Shanti promotions is a success... Speak to you soon famahlee, sending much light and love...

As I get ready to head to my hairdresser, Enensta at Nubian Kinks in Brooklyn, I'm looking over my pics from a photoshoot this morning! I'm so excited not only to get away from the cold weather but this is my first promotional gig internationally for Aye' Shanti! WELCOME!!! Aye’ Shanti Pieces are hand-made jewelry/adornments that are created in the spirit of love, happiness, music infused energies, and pure joy! You will find daily entries on updates, inspirations, things happening in the community, and even some pictures of me and my sidekick, my cat “Soca”!!

This past summer I had the opportunity to visit the island of Barbados for Crop Over… It was love at first sight, (well after my sweet islands of Grenada, Carriacou, & Petite Martinique off course). I had such a wonderful time that I’m heading back this weekend (day after Thanksgiving to be exact and my mum’s birthday *sorry*) for its Independence celebrations (YAAAAY HAPPY 43rd BIRTHDAY BARBADOS). I will also be showcasing/selling my pieces on November 29th, 2009 at the Party Central Independence Lime. So please look out for a fabulous table filled with jewelry ranging from my popular flower pieces, leather, wood, and hair adornments!
